| Brian Epstein was the manager of the Beatles, Billy J Kramer and Gerry & The Pacemakers and many others. He was born on the 19th of September, 1934 in Liverpool, England into a Jewish family to Harry and Malka Epstein. He had one brother, Clive. Brian Epstein grew up a lazy lad and was often expelled from one school to another for poor performance. The longest he spent in one institution was two years at Wrekin College, but shortly before his 16th birthday he left the college as he wanted to become a dress designer. He was later drafted into the Royal Army Service Corps as a clerk where he was frequently punished for failing to pick his army pay!
His career in the development of music started when he joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), from which he dropped out in the 3rd term. After dropping out, he was put in charge of his family’s newly opened music store, the North End Music Store (NEMS). It went on to become one of the biggest music stores in the North of England. He then started writing music columns for magazines.
It was in these columns that he wrote about The Beatles after a performance and on 10th December, he posed the idea of managing them. On January 24th, 1962, he signed a contract to manage The Beatles and although he had no managerial experience, Brian Epstein greatly influenced their attitude and dress code. Brian Epstein worked hard to make The Beatles the success they were, often being described as the fifth Beatle. Brian Epstein died at the age of 32, on 27th August 1967, of a drug overdose, robbing the world of one of the great pop empresarios. |
